The Pamphleteer |
|
During colonial times in America, if you wanted to convince or inform people about some issue that you considered important, you went to the local printer and got some pamphlets printed. You then handed them out, read them to anybody that was interested, nailed them to the town bulletin board, or the nearest tree.
The first amendment was specifically written to protect this type of activity and the writers or "pamphleteers".

News and Events Kerry's Debate Briefing Book (From President Bush's Campaign Manager Ken Mehlman) Dear Patrick, On Thursday night, President Bush and Senator Kerry face off in the first of three debates. Thursday's debate focuses on foreign policy and homeland security. The debate presents an opportunity for the President to present his vision for our national security to the country. It also presents Senator Kerry an opening to explain to the American people exactly where he stands. Unfortunately for the Senator, that may be difficult given his continual vacillation on issue after issue. We'll be there to set the record straight with live response to the Kerry campaign. www.GeorgeWBush.com/DebateFacts On Iraq, Kerry now says the removal of Saddam Hussein has left America less secure. He is currently against the war, and wouldn't have gone to war, but he used to be for the war before he was against the war he voted for before he was against it. Confused? Don't worry! We'll give you the facts to unravel the knot of contradictions that is Kerry's Iraq policy On Cuba, Kerry says he voted for the Helms-Burton Act but actually voted against it. In 2000, he was "being honest" when he said Florida politics are the only reason the embargo hasn't been lifted, but now he says he would not lift it. He was for Fidel Castro before he was against him. On Israel, he told an Arab American group the Israeli security fence was a "barrier to peace" but four months later told a Jewish audience it was a legitimate act of self-defense. His position depends on his audience. What position will he take Thursday? It depends on who he thinks is watching. A threat alert was recived today stating that unscrupulous individuals are sending out email that looks like spam. These emails direct you to click on the link contained in the email such as 'click here to remove your name' or, 'click here to unsubscribe' which will lead you to believe that you are unsubscribing to the spam emailer. However, when you click on the link, you will be brought to a web page and if you do anything such as scroll down on the web site or click anywhere within the screen of the web site, a keystroke logger will be installed on your computer. What this does is to confirm to the spammer that your e-mail address is valid, which will only generate more spam. More importantly, they can compromise your computer by installing malicious programs. Even if you have an e-mail filter that blocks spam messages, however, some get through. Please be alert to these deceptions. I Am Thankful... (From Gene, our correspondent in Washington Heights.) I am thankful: For the wife who says it's hot dogs tonight, because she is home with me, and not out with someone else. For the husband who is on the sofa being a couch potato, because he is home with me and not out at the bars. For the teenager who is complaining about doing dishes because that means she is at home, not on the streets. For the taxes that I pay because it means that I am employed. For the mess to clean after a party because it means that I have been surrounded by friends. For the clothes that fit a little too snug because it means I have enough to eat. For my shadow that watches me work because it means I am out in the sunshine. For a lawn that needs mowing, windows that need cleaning, and gutters that need fixing because it means I have a home. For all the complaining I hear about the government because it means that we have freedom of speech. For the parking spot I find at the far end of the parking lot because it means I am capable of walking and that I have been blessed with transportation. For my huge heating bill because it means I am warm. For the lady behind me that sings off key because it means that I can hear. For the pile of laundry and ironing because it means I have clothes to wear. For weariness and aching muscles at the end of the day because it means I have been capable of working hard. For the alarm that goes off in the early morning hours because it means that I am ! Alive. And finally..... for too much e-mail because it means I have friends who are thinking of me. -- Saturday, September 25, 2004

Huntwork / Constitution Club -- Poor Col. Killian died in 1984 but I believe he would be surprised at the stir he created some twenty years after his death. On the evening of Sept. 8th CBS’s 60 Minutes II dropped what they considered to be a (rather convenient) “bombshell” regarding President Bush’s service in the National Guard. Directly contradicting Defense Department records showing that in 1973 Col. Killian praised Mr. Bush's performance and approved his honorable discharge, four memos from Col. Killian impugning the service of Bush during those years were produced with much fanfare. According to CBS, they consulted a handwriting analyst and document expert who believed the material to be authentic. That was one of the chants today on Capitol Hill. You probably didn't see much of it in the so-called "mainstream" media, but on September 12, 2004 in Washington a rally was held at the U.S. Capitol by a group calling themselves "Vietnam Vets for the Truth." They spoke of having healed from their many physical wounds, but contrasted those with the un-healed wounds that Sen. John Kerry's words had inflicted on them during the Vietnam War and re-opened now with his audacious bid for the Presidency. While many of them were still fighting to keep South Vietnam free from Communist tyranny, Kerry was calling them "war criminals" before Congress and meeting with the enemy in Paris. He's the only Presidential candidate with his picture in a place of honor in the enemy's museum. A sign at the rally called him a "Hanoi John Kerry, Viet Cong war Hero." Memorandum: Democratic Party Voters, by Michelle Anonymous This letter refers to the following article: http://www.conservativemonitor.com/society/2001012.shtml W.J. Rayment's completely untrue characterization of democratic party voters in the article regarding an election day holiday really angered me. I am incensed that a person could make such sweeping, false judgments of those from one party. As long as Rayment is making such generalizations, I may as well make a few more relevant generalizations of my own. I have never in my life found those who vote Republican more hard-working; in fact, it's often been the opposite! Most of those I knew backing up the Republican party are from inherited wealth, rarely lifting a finger if not required. These are the people admitted to Yale or Harvard simply because of Legacy, barely graduate, skip their military service, spend an unaccounted for amount of time involved in hard drugs and driving under the influence, and eventually go on to become President of the United States. Shame on you for your false depictions and scandalous lies. Your ignorance sickens me. Michelle Our Response: Dear Michelle, The article was a humorous poke in the eye at leftist machinations to skew the vote. When the left makes fun of the right, they call it satire. When the right makes fun of the left it is called "false depictions and scandalous lies" (your words). The fact is that the Republican party has been found to be supported, in the main, by the middle class. The Democrats are supported by the the two extremes. The Welfare Class and the Patrician Class. Unfortunately the stereo-type I presented is impregnated with a seed of truth. Cordially, WJR ----- 5. The work of F. R. Duplantier is a welcome break from serious political battles. RATHERBIASED.COM UPDATE ========== WHAT'S NEW ========== The Fallout From Memogate --Earlier, we gave you the internet's reaction to the CBS semi-apology, now, RatherBiased.com is looking how a few of America's newspapers are responding and reporting on the CBS documents kerfuffle. * The New York Times, always the paper with the best network contacts, further confirms that Memogate producer Mary Mapes has become the sacrificial lamb. But not every CBSer is happy about that, Jim Rutenberg and Bill Carter report; some employees believe more important heads need to roll. They also talked with a former colleague of Mapes's, a conservative radio talker who used to work with her, who recalls the CBS producer as being "ardently liberal." Elsewhere in the Times, Kate Zernike reports on the immediate role-reversal that ensued after former Clinton pressec Joe Lockhart admitted that he was asked by CBS to contact its primary document source, Bill Burkett. Prior to that, the Bush people didn't want to talk much about Memogate while the Kerry folk were pumping up the National Guard story. * The other New York papers also have some interesting items today. The Daily News has an article about a "civil war" within "60 Minutes" as some Sunday show figures like Steve Kroft are lambasting their colleagues for running a shoddy story. While at The News, we also couldn't miss columnist Michael Goodwin's scathing editorial denouncing CBS for a number of sins including "smearing" rival newsies "with unforgivable charges of partisanship when first challenged" or the paper's report that Mary Mapes apparently believes she will not be made into the network's scapegoat. The New York Post, meanwhile, has a report about advertisers possibly pulling spots on the "CBS Evening News" in the near future, though it does offer little proof for the assertion as well as a piece on more affiliate reaction to Memogate. * Over at the NYT's archrival, The Washington Post, media reporter Howard Kurt has a column on the affair wondering how CBS can boost its "tattered reputation" without some high-profile firings or resignations. He's also filed a report on the whole Bush-Kerry dispute over the CBS documents. Kurtz's colleague Anne Applebaum has a perceptive column (and we say that not just because she gives us a plug) on what the whole Memogate mess means for the future of television. In the piece, Applebaum states that "Rather and his fellow network newsmen are stuck in a Vietnam/Watergate-era time warp" in which they "regard themselves as the conscience of the nation." She also argues that the episode signals the beginning of the end for network news, as well as a return to a more competitive, and partisan, press. While she sees some negative aspects of this development, on the whole, Applebaum seems fine with the idea. * Across town, The Washington Times has a number of articles on Memogate: Most notable is a profile piece on David Van Os the former lawyer of Bill Burkett as well as a John McCaslin piece on how the Memogate Burkett should not be confused with B. G. Burkett the author of a book exposing false veteran claims. Though both men spell their names the same way, each pronounces his surname differently and the two are political opposites. While you're there, read the WT's take on the Bush-Kerry Memogate dispute as well as the house editorial on the matter. * The Chicago Tribune, which hadn't posted its Wednesday articles when this piece was written, is still worth checking out (username/password: slashdot). Illinois's largest paper has several articles worth reading, including one in which a still-smarting Dan Rather incredibly says he doesn't think CBS's documents were forged. Also notable is a piece from syndicated Miami Herald columnist Leonard Pitts who deplores the developments observed by Applebaum. The Trib also has a piece by reporter Leon Lazaroff who found several people who worry CBS's paper problems will affect Americans' perceptions of the entire news media. * Elsewhere in the Midwest, The Star Tribune of Minnesota has penned an editorial on Memogate, opining that the damage to CBS's rep has been "likely irreparable." The paper also has an article attempting to assess the influence that online publications and blogs are beginning to have. For a less adversarial view of how Memogate affects the "old" vs. "new" media dynamic, see this Philadelphia Inquirer piece. * One more bullet: the Associated Press reports that back in 2000, Al Gore's campaign staff was told of allegations similar to Burkett's but never opted to pursue them. It was not given documents, however. The Los Angeles Times also has one large article on journalism buffs' opinions, those of CBS prez Leslie Moonves, as well as some info on the investigation. ** Go to <http://ratherbiased.com/news/> to view links inside stories mentioned here. ** Daily Brickbat A Good Job If You Can Get It Clarence Henry had a conviction for shoplifting and four Social Security numbers on his record. Naturally, the Transportation Security Administration hired him to search checked baggage for bombs and other contraband. And just as naturally, he was eventually arrested for stealing from those bags, according to CBS News. The TSA still hasn't conducted background checks on many of its employees, and those checks only weed out people convicted of felonies. People with misdemeanor convictions, even for stealing, might still be hired, though the agency claims to have a "zero tolerance" policy for theft. More brickbats... A guy walks into the local welfare office, marches straight up to the counter and says, "Hi . . . You know, I just HATE drawing welfare. I'd really rather have a job". The social worker behind the counter says, "Your timing is excellent. We just got a job opening from a very wealthy old man who wants a chauffeur/bodyguard for his nymphomaniac daughter. You'll have to drive around in his Mercedes, but he'll supply all of your clothes." "Because of the long hours, meals will be provided. You'll be expected to escort her on her overseas holiday trips. You'll have a two-bedroom apartment above the garage. The starting salary is $200,000 a year". The guy says, "You're bullshitting me!" The social worker says, "Yeah, well, you started it." News and Events Democratic Wedding Joke (From Dan, our correspondent in the Commonwealth of Taxachusetts.) There was a much married woman who walked into a bridal shop one day and told the sales clerk that she was looking for a wedding gown for her fourth wedding. "Well," replied the sales clerk, "exactly what type of dress are you looking for?" The bride to be said: "A long frilly white dress with a veil." The sales clerk didn't know quite what to say but she finally said, "Frankly madam, gowns of that nature are considered more appropriate for brides who are being married the first time, for those who are a bit more innocent, if you know what I mean?" "Well" replied the customer, more than a little put out. "I can assure you that I am as innocent as the rest of them. Believe it or not, despite all my marriages, I remain as innocent as any first time bride." "You see, my first husband was so excited about our wedding he died as we were checking into our hotel. My second husband and I got into a terrible fight in the limo on our way to the reception and have not spoken since. We had that wedding annulled immediately." "What about your third husband?" asked the sales clerk. "Well" said the woman, "he was a Democrat and every night for four years he just sat on the edge of the bed and told me how good it was going to be." No More Headaches (From Eugene, our Suffolk County correspondent.) A man is having terrible headaches. He can't sleep, eat, think, or do much of anything because of the pain. Several doctors examined him and couldn't determine the cause of his problem. He finally went to one of the top neurological specialists in the country who examines him and says, "I've found the cause of the pain. Your testicles are pushing up into your spine. The constant pressure on the spine causes the headaches. The only thing I can do is perform surgery and remove your testicles." The man is shocked to hear this but the decision is not difficult as he know he cannot stand the pain of the headaches. He has the surgery and immediately fells like a new man. The pain is completely gone and he feels like he has a new life. He is so happy he decides to buy himself a new suit. He goes to a small men's shop and tells the old tailor that he wants to buy a suit. "Sure," says the tailor. "You're a 42 long, right?" "Wow, how did you know?" says the man. "Hey, I've been in this business a long time. You learn a few things" said the tailor." The tailor brought the man a suit that fit perfectly. It looked so good that the man decided to buy a new shirt to go with it. "16, 34, right?" said the tailor. "Right again!" said the man. "You're amazing." "Hey, I've been in this business a long time. You learn a few things". The tailor brought a shirt and tie and they looked great. The man said, "Hey, let's go for broke. Give me a pair of the silk boxers too." The tailor said, "36 right?" "I'm disappointed," said the man. "But 2 out of 3 is still good. I wear size 34 boxers." The tailor said, "Hey, I've been in this business for a long time and I think you need 36." The man replied, "It's obvious you know your business but I've worn size 34 for as long as I can remember. I'm going to have to disagree with you on this one". "Hey look," said the tailor, "I'll sell you whatever you want. But I've been in this business a long time. If you wear a size 34 it's gonna push your nuts up into your spine and give you terrible headaches." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Monday, September 20, 2004

Of course, had the folks at CBS been reading FreeRepublic.com, INDCJournal, Little Green Footballs, RatherBiased.com, Hugh Hewitt, Powerline, AllahPundit, InstaPundit, and CNS News, they could have saved themselves a whole lot of embarrassment. In retrospect, it really is quite farcical that Dan Rather's hand-picked CBS News management persisted for so long against the facts, especially considering that it condemns politicians when they do the exact same thing. Twenty Things CBS Won't Apologize For <http://ratherbiased.com/news/> --More than likely, any CBS "apology" is going to be very tempered and likely reiterate previous network statements that "no one has challenged the content of our report." This is flatly false. A number of people have criticized CBS's reporting including the White House, President Bush's father, the Killian family, Ben Barnes's daughter Amy Barnes Stites, as well as several of Bush's former associates including Col. Walter Staudt, Col. Bobby Hodges, as well as Bush's roommate Dean Roome. These Bush for years. We hope, but are not expecting, that the network will also apologize for the following: 1. Failing to use the best document experts it could find, 2. Hiring a signature expert to look at a copied document when he himself said earlier that doing such a thing was foolish, 3. Ignoring and lying about the testimony of those it did hire, 4. Failing to interview Marian Knox as well as the others listed above, 5. Not interviewing anyone directly connected with Lt. Col Killian, 6. Not informing viewers that Staudt had retired a year-and-a-half before the time he was supposedly trying to help "sugarcoat" Bush's record, 7. Failing to inform viewers that not a single verified document signed by Killian or his fellow officers during the time period used the typographical techniques used in the CBS Memos, 8. Not mentioning Ben Barnes's partisan background enough, 9. Not disclosing the 30-year friendship of the two Texas Democrats Barnes and Rather, 10. Failing to even know who producer Mary Mapes's document source was before the broadcast, 11. Dishonestly impugning the motives of critics, 12. Using its news broadcasts to defend a bad report instead of examining how it could be wrong, 13. Never once featuring a single document expert on the air who doubted CBS's claims, 14. Putting total non-experts on the air to spin the preferred "authentic" line even though CBS would not allow them to see its documents, 15. Not mentioning that Killian never kept notes and hated to type, 16. Failing to provide the public with copies of the documents as close as possible to the ones CBS obtained, 17. Not finding out if the office in which Killian worked even had a typewriter capable of duplicating most of the complex formatting used in the CBS documents (it did not), 18. Federal Bank, Thrift and Credit Union Regulatory Agencies Provide Brochure with Information on Internet "Phishing" The federal bank, thrift and credit union agencies today announced the publication of a brochure with information to help consumers identify and combat a new type of Internet scam known as "phishing." The term is a play on the word "fishing," and that's exactly what Internet thieves are doing--fishing for confidential financial information, such as account numbers and passwords. With enough information, a con artist can run up bills on another person's credit card or, in the worst case, even steal that person's identity. In a common type of phishing scam, individuals receive e-mails that appear to come from their financial institution. The e-mail may look authentic, right down to the use of the institution's logo and marketing slogans. The e-mails often describe a situation that requires immediate attention and then warn that the account will be terminated unless the e-mail recipients verify their account information immediately by clicking on a provided link. The link will take the e-mail recipient to a screen that asks for account information. While it may appear to be a page sponsored by a legitimate financial institution, the information will actually go to the con artist who sent the e-mail. The federal financial regulatory agencies want consumers to know that they should never respond to such requests. No legitimate financial institution will ever ask its customers to verify their account information online. The brochure also advises consumers: Never click on the link provided in an e-mail if there is reason to believe it is fraudulent. The link may contain a virus. Do not be intimidated by e-mails that warn of dire consequences for not following their instructions. If there is a question about whether the e-mail is legitimate, go to the company's site by typing in a site address that you know to be legitimate. If you fall victim to a phishing scam, act immediately to protect yourself by alerting your financial institution, placing fraud alerts on your credit files and monitoring your account statements closely. Report suspicious e-mails or calls to the Federal Trade Commission through the Internet at www.consumer.gov/idtheft , or by calling 1-877-IDTHEFT. The interagency brochure is available on each agency's web site and financial institutions are encouraged to download the camera-ready file for use in their own customer-education programs. What Women Are Thinking... (From Gene, our correspondent in Washington Heights.) Behind every successful woman is herself . A woman is like a tea bag... you don't know how strong she is until you put her in hot water I have yet to hear a man ask for advice on how to combine marriage and a career. Coffee, chocolate, men; some things are just better rich. I’m out of estrogen and I have a gun. Warning: I have an attitude, and I know how to use it. Of course I don't look busy...I did it right the first time. Do not start with me. You will not win. All stressed out; and no one to choke. A LETTER FROM PRESIDNT GEORGE W. BUSH Dear Patrick, The election is less than seven weeks away and our momentum is building. As I travel the country, the crowds are big and the mood is upbeat. There is real excitement for our agenda, and I know that this enthusiasm will mean a tremendous turnout. On Election Day, you may be one of many who will be working the polls, driving voters to their polling locations, or making Get Out the Vote calls. Our message must be: No matter what you're doing, be sure to vote. The stakes are high. Starting today, you can request your ballot by mail, and soon you can cast an early ballot at early vote locations in your area. If you're going to be busy on November 2nd, I encourage you to take this opportunity and vote early. There's even a special page on our campaign website to make the process easier. www.GeorgeWBush.com/VoteEarly Using this link, you can get your Absentee/By Mail ballot request or find a list of early voting locations near you. By casting your vote early, you can avoid lines at the polls on Election Day and still be sure your voice is heard in this important election. This election is critical for our nation. The choice is between winning the war on terror by defending the homeland, taking the battle to the terrorists and fighting them where they live and train - or retreating to a pre-9/11 worldview that treats acts of terrorism as a law enforcement issue. The choice is between a practical approach that puts doctors and patients in control of health care decisions or a government-run system that would cost more than $1.5 trillion and put bureaucrats in charge. The choice is between an economic agenda that recognizes America's economy is growing, but can do more, or an agenda that raises taxes, increases regulations and stifles our economic recovery. Your vote is important to winning and to building a safer world and a more hopeful America. I hope you will take the opportunity to vote early - either by mail or in person. www.GeorgeWBush.com/VoteEarly Thanks for all you have done for my campaign, and all you will do over the next 46 days. Sincerely, S/ George W. Bush P.S. Beginning today, you can request your ballot by mail, or you can soon cast your vote at early vote locations in your area. I encourage you to take this opportunity and vote early. We've even set up a special page on our website to make the process a little easier - www.GeorgeWBush.com/VoteEarly. Be sure to direct your friends living overseas to our website so they can vote absentee as well.
